Indeed, mallets have become hot commodities, in part because golfers find them so easy to align. Great new blades (and near blade-like beauties) include: Mizuno's MP-32, Titleist's 690.mb and 704.cb, TaylorMade's rac TP and LT models, MacGregor's M675, PING's S59, Cleveland's CG1, Wilson Staff's Pi5 and Ben Hogan's Apex FTX. They also have injected their cavity-back, perimeter-weighted models with more shot-making prowess, by reducing the size of their club heads and cavities.
Contemporary iron designers have found ways of enhancing new blade-style clubs with added forgiveness by building small cavity backs into them. Love the game, work on hitting forged clubs like these and you'll enjoy your time out on the course.A wise old golf proverb states, "It's not how you drive, it's how you arrive," and today's new irons offer first-class delivery systems. Lessons would ultimately be best, but most of us don't always chose that option. If you play and want to know each hit to better fine tune your swing, you won't be disappointed with a set of these. If you want low scores by occasional play, play the game forgiving clubs. I feel I can improve my game with the feedback of a club like this whereas I could never hit a set of Cleveland CG Gold irons (fitted to me) with the same accuracy and consistency. I'm contemplating reshafting at some point. With slowing down my tempo, I'm not sure about the apex 4 shafts at this point being best. The shots I hit pure seemed to sail effortlessly where I wanted with a super soft feel and a beautiful muted "click" on the Titleist NXT Tour balls I was using (gift). One of the people I was playing with picked it up and commented on how good it looked. I almost made the mistake of leaving my E iron behind on the green. Although I ended up with a 95, I still felt good about my round and still seem to hit long irons better than my hybrids.
It was all a matter of getting my tempo slower, good contact, and letting the club do its job. The toe hits fell 20-30 yards short (and stung) of what a good hit should have done. But I managed to dial in my shots from that point on with a few toe hits. The first 3 holes were what did my score (double, triple, triple) in as I wasn't hitting them well (putting was fine). I took these out for 18 holes to give them a whirl. Some look almost unused and the 7 iron has been the most used out of the set. 3-e for $90 with clubs in very good to excellent condition. Ok, this is the second set of Ben Hogan clubs I've bought within a month. If you have the stroke and genius for the game like I do then may I suggest a set or two. I tipped my caddie $10 as the clubs became dirty on more than one occassion. I shot even par, thanks to a couple of three putts and turned in my score like a gentleman. Throughout the remainig holes I continued to hit laser guided bombs with these extraordinary clubs. I hit a laser of a drive down the center and then proceeded to flush an 8 iron within 3 feet of the hole. I then asked one of the caddies to accompany me to the first tee and asked him to take special care of my new toys. Trajectory was blissful, distance was sublime and sound, fit & finish were second to none. I began with the 7 iron and proceeded to hit the most perfect shots I had ever seen. To my delight the grass range had recently been cut by Ygnacio and I was the first to swing on the fresh turf. I happened upon a set of these in the used section of Golf Galaxy, procured them and headed to the club.
